Brearley Defeat Poly Prep Girls

In their third match of the week, Poly Girls’ Varsity headed to the Harvard Club in Manhattan to face off against Brearley on Wednesday, January 16th. Playing on only two courts, the match proved to be extremely close from the start, as sophomore Lizzy Lasusa worked hard to keep her opponent under pressure in the longest match of the afternoon, butLasusa could not stop her opponent’s momentum in the fifth game.

The next two matches on Lasusa’s court were equally as close, as eight grader Kim Burke and captain Nicole Colandrea played determined squash to push their opponents to five and four games, respectively. After losing the first game, Burke, made impressive adjustments and reversed the momentum taking the next game 11-1. But Burke’s more experienced opponent quickly came back and made it difficult for Burke to regain control, taking the match in the fifth game.

With a tied overall match score, Colandrea was the last match on and after a tough first game, she came back to even the score at one game all. But her Brearley opponent proved to be too strong and took the match in four games. Even with sophomore Grace Bell’s, freshman Lena Khalifa’s, and sophomore Izzy Plotnik’s convincing victories, the Brearley squad proved to be too strong and took the overall team victory 4-3.

The Blue Devils are looking forward to their rematch with Brearley in a week, where they hope to reverse this past week’s result!
