The Michael Rothenberg Scholarship Foundation

The Rothenberg Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that was established in 2012. The Foundation serves the New York City area and provides scholarships to underprivileged students. Rothenberg Foundation scholarship recipients have matriculated at some of the country’s most prestigious institutions, where they also play on their squash teams. Scholarship recipients are recognized for social service and leadership and for regularly participating in the game of squash at any level.

Juan Santos
2019 Rothenberg Scholar
Middlebury College class of 2023

Juan joined City Squash as a 6th grader & quickly established himself as a top student and avid squash player. He earned a scholarship to Poly Prep and has excelled both in the classroom and in several extracurricular activities. He is an honor roll student and also a member of the squash, soccer and ultimate frisbee teams. Additionally, as a talented speaker & spoken word artist, he has performed at Poly Prep and CitySquash. AS a senior, he earned a scholarship from the Posse Foundation and will attend Middlebury College in the fall.  He intends to join the squash team.   .

Giselle Cabrera
2018 Rothenberg Scholar
Mount Holyoke class of 2022

Giselle joined CitySquash as a 6th grader and is currently a high school senior. She has consistently behaved in an exemplary manner both in the classroom and on the court. Giselle was voted Captain of the CitySquash program this fall and has continued to lead by example. She made her high school Honor Roll for six terms during high school and took many honors and AP classes. Last summer, Giselle was accepted into the Global Glimpse program where she traveled to Ecuador for and helped to rebuild a domestic abuse center. Giselle was thrilled to be accepted Early Decision to Mt. Holyoke this fall and will play on their squash team.

Hakeem Elliot
2017 Rothenberg Scholar
New York University class of 2017

Hakeem has been a participant in StreetSquash since 2008 and has has demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment and love of squash. He graduated at the top of his high school class and earned nearly every StreetSquash award possible. At NYU, he balances academics, part-time job, along with extracurriculars including the club squash team, a mentorship program and the Gentlemen of Quality club. This summer Hakeem will intern at The Bronx Freedom Fund and hopes to start his career in the field of public service.

 

Fernando Flores
2016 Rothenberg Scholar
Hobart & William Smith class of 2016

As the oldest of five children, Fernando has shown a maturity and understanding far beyond his years. He won th eCitySquash Sportsmanship Award and subsequently earned a full scholarship to Trinity-Pawling School and also at Hobart & William Smith Colleges. He has shown great strength in balancing his academics, volunteer efforts, and on-campus job. Fernando is very active at his school, taking leadership roles for both the Latin American Organization and the Race and Racism Coalition. His passion for politics and social action led to an internship with the Environmental Defense Fund. Fernando continues to mentor younger CitySquash students and volunteers as a tutor and squash coach in the Bronx.

William Pantle
2015 Rothenberg Scholar
Fordham University class of 2019

William joined CitySquash six years ago as a sixth grader, earning the CitySquash Rookie of the Year Award in 2009. William has always been exceptional both in the classroom and on the squash court, which led to him being named the CitySquash Team Captain both his junior and senior years. As captain, William regularly travels to watch other team members play in tournaments without being asked and is an outstanding role model to younger teammates. In the classroom William currently boasts a 92.5% average, which includes three AP classes. He also took three AP courses in his junior year, finishing the year with an 85% overall average. In addition to squash, Williams plays for the Bowling and Tennis teams at Flushing High School. William will attend Fordham University in the fall of 2015.

Brandy Williamson
2014 Rothenberg Scholar
Mount Holyoke College class of 2018

During her years at StreetSquash, Brandy dedicated herself to academic, athletic and personal excellence. She represented StreetSquash in a number of ways, including as an ambassador to the Tournament of Champions and Howe Cup.
Brandy graduated from Thurgood Marshall Academy in Harlem. She was one of the top students in her class and was actively involved in her school community. Further, she is a master of the spoken word, competing in debate at a national level and also traveled to Paris to share her work. Athletically, she was one of the top squash players of her year. She worked tirelessly to hone her skills and her competitive edge. She has competed in various citywide and national tournaments, always conducting herself with the highest sportsmanship.

Katiria Sanchez
2013 Rothenberg Scholar
Trinity College (CT) class of 2017

Katiria is currently a junior at Trinity College, where she on the varsity women’s team. She joined CitySquash in sixth grade and was a model team member from the start, exhibiting tremendous determination and resilience to get to where she is today. Katiria’s mother lives in Puerto Rico, and Katiria has been raised by her maternal grandmother in the Bronx. She also lived with her older paraplegic brother, whom she helped to care for. After briefly moving back to Puerto Rico in ninth grade, she returned to the Bronx and graduated from a local public school, the Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics. Her notable achievements include being elected the first CitySquash high school captain, winning two Urban Team National titles, and earning a full scholarship to Trinity College.
