In the first match of the 2012-2013 season, the Poly Prep Girls¹ Varsity faced off against a strong Spence squad. The Blue Devils, supported by an enthusiastic crowd, fought hard on their home courts, but ultimately lost 1-6. Every match throughout the afternoon provided a valuable learning and playing experience for the Poly team. Sophomore Grace Bell ended the match with the only win at the number one position, decisively taking down her Spence opponent 11-0, 11-7, 11-6. Other notable matches included new varsity players, Kim Burke (8th grader) and Olivia Doran (10th grader), who had two of the closest matches of the night. Both players displayed impressive perseverance and athleticism throughout the match, but lost in a tight four games. The six exhibition matches included 5 members of the JV squad, all who stepped up their games to compete in their first squash match of their Poly career. The Girls¹ Varsity looks forward to this week¹s matches against team rivals and neighbors, Saint Ann¹s and Packer on Wednesday and Thursday at Eastern Athletic Club in Brooklyn Heights. The JV will travel to Blair on Saturday for their first official match of the season. Final Score: Poly 1, Spence 6
