I just wanted to let you know that Howe Cup was a huge success. Harrow made us awesome tshirts, that other teams were asking us if they could purchase. The best part was that you could tell we were part of the New York team when we were both playing and cheering. Great brand recognition. On another, perhaps more important note, the A division is the official Howe Cup. The winners of that division bring home the big silver bowl that has various cities engraved on it. Our A team, made up of Kelsey Engman, Tehani Guruge, Charlene Neo, Samantha Beuchner and Lauralynn Drury, finished third behind Washington DC and Philadelphia. I am very proud of this accomplishment for two reasons, 1) this is the highest finish our A team has had in a long time 2) it was comprised of people who actually live in New York and perhaps, most importantly, all five of these women are under 30 and former college players. This is the demographic that we have been trying to capture at both national and local levels. They were wonderful sportswomen on court, and it was a pleasure to watch them compete. Our StreetSquash girls were definitely a highlight for all of the athletes at the Howe Cup. They attended the Saturday night party, and danced with most of the women from other cities, as did Sasha, their fearless leader and Linda and Star, who are parents of two of the girls. David Hughes did an amazing job, coaching five teams, twenty-five players, and he did a huge amount of work behind the scenes that most people don't know about. As most of you know this caught me in the middle of my graduate school applications, and David took care of liasing with StreetSquash over rosters, submitting forms to US Squash, and looking up 26 Us Squash numbers. (No small feat!!) I was reading an article about Ole Miss last week, famous for their tailgating. Ole Miss hasn't won the SEC championship since the late 1960s, but they say, 'We may not win the game, but we definitely win the party.' The New York girls shut down the party on Saturday night. As you do. I think that this was a massive success, and the money we put into this is beginning to pay off in huge ways. Look out for the Howe Cup edition of Squash Magazine.
