The Americans, in gin rummy parlance, finally “got off the schneid” when a Bronx all-star team defeated the RLC Squash Team, 5-4. The final match between the #2s decided the match, which was viewed by an overflow crowd at Fordham University’s squash center.

The Bronx team consisted of four faculty members from CitySquash, two players from the Fordham varsity and three Citysquash juniors. Bryan Patterson, coach at both Citysquash and Fordham, state that “this affirms that the Bronx is the epicenter of American squash.”

The Brits attempted a last minute shuffle by drafting a last-minute substitute in the #9 position, but this move backfired as Robert Williams of Citysquash defeated Hon. Lt Doug Garr 3-0 who is 50 years his senior. The play was spirited and was enjoyed by the enthusiastic crowd. The British Chairman, unaware that New York City law requires that all events held in the Bronx have a triple weighting, made light of the loss stating that the British team had already clinched the War of 1812 Redux trophy.

In fact, the Americans can still win the trophy if they defeat the Brits at the Harvard Club on the 3rd and SCLA on the 4th since a tie results in the retention of the trophy by its holder. This same rule applies in a certain golf event, which the British team was bragging about during their futile effort in the Bronx.
