The Battle of the Boros III was contested at Sports Club/LA in New York City. The Manhattan team won 7-5, but the match was clearly overshadowed by the third match of the evening when former British champion Bryan Patterson, the captain of the Bronx team, entered Court 3 to play. On entering he announced his intention to rejoin the PSA tour after an absence of many years. He said that this move was motivated by the fact that the fortunes of English squash has ebbed due to the dominance recently of Ramy Ashour who has consistently beaten English stars Willstrop and Matthew. “I know I am a bit rusty, but give me a month to get back into playing shape. I am doing this for Queen and Country and not for glory and coin”. He immediately displayed his lack of shape by losing his match.

The players who followed last fall’s British Army matches with various New York clubs were surprised at the appearance of former British Private Gabriella Sarah who played for Manhattan. She indicated in October her intention to re-enlist in the British Army upon her pending 18th birthday. Apparently she did not. She told a group of Fordham players who were representing the Bronx that she would soon continue her education in New Jersey and play some squash before making any dramatic career moves.

The match featured several strategic moves by Eddie Kapur, the New York Captain. Taking advantage of sections of the New York City Administrative Code Chapter 703 governing events such as this he invoked section 17 which provides that “the home or host team may designate which team a resident of one boro who works in the other will be placed on”. Kapur, taking advantage of this provision, designated that Richard Chin would play for Manhattan where he works and not on the Bronx (where he resides). Chin won the deciding match only minutes before the cleaning crew invaded the courts. Kapur also invoked section 23 which provides: at the option of the home or host team captain, all players who reach a 2-0 advantage in a match must consume a beer in the 90 seconds between the second and third games.

The flow of beer and the large and demonstrative crowd enjoyed the high-level play and ample supply of beer (not in that order). The results below contain many false or partial names since several of the players are involved in the PSA-PST rivalry and do not want to face the blacklist.
