World Juniors vital for “Wallbangers” movie

By ADRIAN  FULNECZEK

Director Omar S. Khodeir, the man behind the highly anticipated “Wallbangers” movie, is coming to Wrocław to shoot what he calls “a vital part” of his story during the World Junior Championships 2013.

“Wallbangers” follows the lives of mainly 6 Egyptian squash Champions (Amr Shabana, Ramy Ashour, the Shorbagy brothers, Nour El Sherbini and Raneem El Weleily) for the last two years.  It chronicles the players’ journeys around the world, ups and downs, not leaving the political and social upheavals out of the picture. The last part is perhaps why the NileRoadFilms company advertises the movie as “an existential sport documentary”.

Squash fans around the globe have been of course dying to see the end result of director Omar S. Khodeir work. Even the first teasers gave them insight into the lives of squash stars they could have otherwise not obtain (hearing Amr Shabana say “I don’t keep runner-up trophies” or Ashour thrash talking during an exhibition with Weleily being the early favourites). The long wait might however be finally over as the movie’s official Facebook page has lately announced that “Wallbangers” might premiere in December 2013. There are therefore just two more locations left in which Khodeir’s team will shoot. The penultimate one is Poland and the Junior Worlds, starting on July 16.

Khodeir said:  ”I will arrive in Wrocław following Nour El Sherbini and other Egyptian players. In the past I have filmed in Qatar, Kuwait, England and lately in France during the World Teams. Poland is another stop on the list. Is it the last one before we conclude our work on the movie? I wish it was, but after that we still have to go to Manchester for the World Mens Championships. The World Juniors in Wrocław are, however, the only junior event featured in the film and a key setting in the story.”

By coming to Wrocław, Khodeir might be hoping to catch squash history in the making on tape: if the top seed, 17-year old Nour El Sherbini wins her third World Junior title, she will become the most successful junior squash player to ever play the game. The tournament starts in a week’s time, on July 16th.

The events will feature the World Individual Under-19 titles for both men and women (16-21 July), followed by the Women’s World Junior Team Championship (22-27 July). The announcement – coming on the eve of the 2012 edition taking place in Doha, Qatar – sees the 2013 event being played at the Hasta La Vista Club, a new Wroclaw facility considered the biggest in this part of Europe.
