The newest facility for Western Athletic Clubs,Bay Club Silicon Valley, took full advantage of the chance to shine in its new community on Thursday, July 19, 2012 when it invited press guests in for a first look.

Even with painters, scaffolding, and tarps still in sight, it's clear this is a beautiful facility: well-appointed, well-thought-through, and welcoming.

Lisa Graf, senior vice president for Western Athletic Clubs' South Bay locations, led the tour and was clearly an involved stakeholder in every part of the three-storied, 70,000-square-foot facility. She talked about the research, the community input (including nearby Apple Computer), and the design ideas that went into the club.

Bay Club Silicon Valley, she explained, is a different concept than the resort/fitness facilities (Courtside Club, Decathlon Club, Pacific Sports Resort Redwood Shores) that WAC already has in South Bay.

Rather than a resort concept, this facility has no tennis or swimming (members have privileges at the Decathlon Club for those activities). Instead, it caters to the busy Valley worker's lifestyle needs: fitness that incorporates socialization, relaxation, and work demands.

There are seating areas to gather and talk, wi-fi, a Starbucks with extended menu, conference rooms with phone/video hookups, a day spa (open to non-members), even an over-sized nail salon because research shows that women like to come with friends and enjoy a socialized mani-pedi.

There's art throughout, touch-screen information, Italian marble tile in the dressing area, phone chargers in the lockers, and multi-level activities for children. When a member visits the club and swipes their card, reward points are awarded.

There's even a special family entrance with automatic sliding doors for ease of entering with strollers. Family memberships come with 30 hours of child care a month, which includes child watch, a study zone, video fitness, and programming for children ages 6 and up. There will also be 30-minute fitness classes for kids age 10 and up.

Fitness and amenities
The fitness center includes 10,000 square feet of workout (cardio/weight) equipment. There is a separate cycling room, several stretching "nooks," and studios dedicated to group exercise, Pilates (both machine and mat), and yoga. Four squash courts are on site, with additional courts available at the Decathlon Club.

The locker areas include whirlpool spas, steam, and sauna.

The commitment, according to Graf, is to focus on health and fitness; wellness and yoga; sports facilities and leagues; family recreation; children’s programming and camps; and socializing and networking. The club also offers mobile business services, including iPad devices for complimentary use, and small meeting facilities.
